About Ganapathy English Medium School
Our History
In the very heart of Mangaluru, housed in a fiery red stone heritage building stands the bustling, historic Ganapathy High School (GHS). Its mere mention evokes awe among its current students and cherished memories among the alumni.
A legendary institution that began as the “Saraswat School” from the humble precincts of the Shri Umamaheshwara Temple in 1870, it went on to become a model school with a curriculum prescribed by the Madras Presidency, of which Mangalore was then a part.
In 1909, the school was officially named Ganapathy Secondary School and found itself operating from a ramshackle barrack-style building on Field Street.

Expansion
- We shifted to our current 2-acre campus at Hampankatta in 1915.
- In 1918, we commenced a structured upgrade and achieved High School status. Carpentry and weaving were introduced as crafts, and its students even won certificates of merit in far-away places like the Trichur Exhibition.
- By 1924 the winds of British-style modernization were sweeping through the Indian education edifice and the Ganapathy High School was no exception. A children’s block, co-education, scouts, and new systems of teaching were rapidly introduced.
- With an increasing demand for English-medium education in Mangaluru, Ganapathy English Medium School (GEMS) was started in 1989.
- For a few years, Ganapathy High School and Ganapathy English Medium School were operating in parallel. Over time, the huge demand and popularity of English-medium education overpowered the local medium of instruction and led to a slow decline in admissions for the Kannada-medium Ganapathy High School.
